Welcome to East Chilton Volunteer Fire and Rescue
East Chilton Fire Department was founded in 1977 when members of the community realized there was a need for organized fire protection. The members of the department built the first fire station themselves and the station is still in use as Station 91.
East Chilton Volunteer Fire Department is an all volunteer department of approximately 20 firefighters. We operate out of 3 fire stations and our coverage area spans approximately 35 square miles of primarily residential and farmland use with a light mix of commercial and industrial use. Station 91 houses Engine 91, Tanker 91, and Rescue 99. Station 92 houses Engine 92, Tanker 92, and Brush Truck 9. Station 93 houses our 32' Baja Fire Boat. Our permanent population is estimated at 3800 citizens with an influx in the Summer months due to the housing on Lake Mitchell. We are funded through a mill tax levied on property.
East Chilton is dispatched through Chilton County E-9-1-1 Communications Center to incidents. We operate on a county-wide numbering system and our assigned number is 90. This means that all of our apparatus and personnel numbers must start with 9. We receive alerts on a VHF pager that volunteers carry with them. Once the alert is received for an incident the volunteers must then respond to the station from wherever they may be at the time of the call. Once arriving at the station the volunteers put on the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the incident they are responding to. Once this task is done they then get into the appropriate apparatus for the incident and respond.
The past few years has allowed our department to make many improvements in our equipment and the services we are able to provide. In 2002 we purchased Engine 91 (see apparatus page for all apparatus descriptions) as a one-year old apparatus. In 2004 we purchased Rescue 99 as a brand new EMS response vehicle. In 2004 we were also awarded a FireAct Grant which allowed us to purchase PPE, SCBA's, Extrication Equipment, Thermal Imaging Camera, and Training materials. The year 2007 has proven to be the icing on the cake for our department in recent history. In 2007 we were awarded two FireAct grants, one for a Water Tanker/Tender and one for a complete update of our communications equipment. The Water Tanker/Tender will be the first brand new fire apparatus the department has ever purchased and the communications equipment will allow the department to provide a portable radio for each seated position on all of our apparatus.
